How to Improve Jawline Definition to get that sculpted look

February 1, 2022

Jawline definition can improve facial harmony, helping to highlight the best features of the face and create enhanced symmetry. However, it can be difficult to achieve. If you’re not naturally blessed with a defined jawline, what can you do about it? You may have looked into jawline exercises, facial yoga, jawline balls, workouts, and more.

But if these methods haven’t worked well for you, you may have tried to look for something more effective and long-lasting. That’s where cosmetic treatments come in. Certain minimally-invasive cosmetic treatments can improve jawline definition, leaving you with a sharp, strong jaw.

We’re going to get the scoop from Dr. Oisin Browne at our at our Dublin City Centre clinic to cover which treatments work best for jaw definition, and the best jaw exercises you can do at home.

What’s the Appeal of a Chiseled Jaw?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Each person has unique beauty. But there are universally acknowledged components of beauty; number one being symmetry. Facial symmetry is appealing to humans for evolutionary reasons, this is known as the Evolutionary Advantage theory.

Evolutionary scientists believe that symmetrical faces are attractive because they indicate being in good health. Asymmetry is normal, with one 2015 study finding that up to 37 percent of people have facial asymmetry. However, we’re evolutionarily programmed to be attracted to the person with the healthiest genes. Facial symmetry and a well-balanced jaw are characteristics we have attributed to this.

For men, a strong, chiseled jaw is a symbol of masculinity. It infers strength and power. That’s not just for men who want those as characteristics. Aside from the symbolism of a chiseled jaw, men who want to achieve facial harmony may want to enhance their jawline.

For women, a defined jaw is attributed to youth and confidence. Many women may want different jawline features to men, for example less wide and square. But the same premise is there: a well-defined, sculpted jawline that emphasizes your best facial features.

Why Don’t I Have a Defined Jawline?

Have you found yourself wondering why you don’t have a defined jawline? Here are some possible answers.

1. Genetics

The most common reason as to why you may not have a defined jawline is simple and unfortunately unavoidable: genetics. The bone that attaches to your skull below the ear is called the mandible or jawbone. The shape, size, and structure of this bone is largely hereditary.

The muscle of the jaw we associate with the width and squareness of the jaw is called the masseter. The masseter muscle is a quadrangular muscle that differs in size, person-to-person.

Take a look at your parents and check to see what their jawlines are like. The likelihood is you will follow in their footsteps.

2. Body weight

The lack of a sculpted jawline can be caused from being overweight. The face is a common area for fat deposits, so the higher your body fat, the higher your risk for a hidden jawline. If you have a double chin, also known as submental fat, it will be covering the bone of your jaw. To reveal your natural bone structure, you would have to lose weight.

3. Age

When you age, a few things happen that can alter your jawline. Firstly, your body produces less collagen. This decline in collagen production happens at age 25 and continues to decrease with age, and rapidly decreasing after menopause.

This causes volume loss and sagging of the skin. This is known as jowls. Jowls are also worse in people with higher body fat percentages, of which age is a risk factor.

Another age-related cause of a weak jawline is retrogenia - the loss of soft and bone tissue with age. This can soften the jawline and cause it to recede.

How to Improve Jawline Definition at Home

Want to add definition to a weak jaw? Luckily there are many things you can do to improve your jawline definition. There are lots of products for jawline sculpting. A simple Google search will bring you to thousands of products and services: jawline exercise balls, jawline yoga, jaw strengtheners - you name it. Let’s start with a popular home remedy: jawline exercises.

The Best Jawline Exercises to Add Definition

1. Mewing

Mewing has become a hot topic online, but what is it? Mewing is a technique that is said to sculpt the jawline and combat a double chin by adjusting the placement of the tongue.

  • Close your mouth and gently touch your teeth together.
  • Flatten your tongue against the roof of the mouth and lightly press upwards.
  • You’ll feel your jaw muscles engage.
  • Maintain this throughout the day until it becomes your natural mouth positioning.

2. Neck curl

When you want to target your abdomen, you perform a curling motion known as a sit-up. This neck curl exercise is very similar! It works the muscles in your neck that are connected to the jaw.

  • Lay down on your back and adjust your mouth position so you are mewing.
  • Tuck your chin into your chest.
  • Lift your head a couple of inches off the ground.
  • Slowly lower, and repeat.

3. Jaw jutting

Also known as jaw anterior protrusion, this exercise is simple and effective and is commonly used to treat TMJ pain. It can be done whenever, wherever.

  • In an upright position, jut your lower jaw forward so you are creating an underbite.
  • Perform slowly, for at least 30 repetitions per session to get the best results.

4. Exaggerated O and E

This exercise targets the jaw muscles in the cheeks and the muscles surrounding the mouth. By recruiting these muscles, you can help to strengthen them.

  • In an upright position, bring your lips together and suck your cheekbones in to make an exaggerated ‘O’ sound.
  • Next, widen the mouth and jaw to make an exaggerated ‘E’ sound.
  • Repeat these two vowels one after the other for at least a minute. Try to exaggerate as much as possible to activate your jaw muscles optimally!

Do Jawline Exercises Work?

Now you’ve got some inspiration for jaw exercises, the next question is do jawline exercises work? According to Dr. Oisin, they might have a subtle benefit. As with most at-home treatments, there aren’t any quick fixes. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

There have not been any studies to test the efficacy of jaw exercises for facial sculpting. However, other relevant studies have shown that jaw exercises can be used to treat temporomandibular disorders (TMJ). This suggests that the jaw muscles and bones are positively affected by repeated movements.

Another potentially relevant study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology which measured whether facial yoga was able to bring about any changes to the face. After 20 weeks, practicing for 30 minutes per day, facial exercises improved cheek fullness. This shows that facial exercises can have an effect on facial structure and appearance, indicating that jaw exercises may be beneficial.

Many people think that if you perform jaw exercises, you’ll build jaw muscle. Unfortunately this isn’t exactly right. The jawbone does not run around the edge of the jaw like most people think. The muscles of the jaw are predominantly in the cheek region, and a few in the neck.

Thus, attempting to exercise your way to a defined jaw is not really possible. In fact, you might just increase the size of the muscles in the cheeks. The masseter muscle can grow in size however. Conditions like bruxism, TMJ disorders, unilateral chewing, and clenching can cause masseter hypertrophy. But these conditions cause facial asymmetry, discomfort and sometimes pain. So don’t wish them upon yourself!

As stated by Dr. Oisin, “Jaw exercises are unlikely to be damaging or dangerous. However, they’re also not really effective. Some people may experience a subtle change in their appearance but results are by no means guaranteed.”

So what should you do instead of jaw exercises? The most effective way to define your jaw is with cosmetic treatments.

How to Get Instant Jawline Definition

The best way to get instant jawline definition is with dermal filler.

Dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally-occurring substance in the body. It is injected into facial lines, folds, and tissues to restore facial volume that may decrease with age. Additionally, dermal fillers can be used to add structure to your face such as in the jawline.

At Sisu Clinic, cosmetic medical doctors use dermal filler to add structure and shape to your jawline area.

Here’s what Dr. Oisin has to say about it, “Jawline filler achieves results instantly. By the end of your appointment, you’ll see a difference in your face. This will continue to take shape over the coming days when it heals and any swelling goes down.”

But not all people want the same looking jaw, so how does jawline filler work? Depending on your desired results, Sisu doctors can adjust the placement of the filler to create width or length in the jaw area.

The most common desired outcomes of jaw filler are:

  1. Widening the face to create structure
  2. Lengthening and slimming the face

Jawline injections can be used to add more structure and width to the face. This is very popular among male patients, but has become increasingly utilized among female patients who want to balance out their features and achieve improved harmony. To achieve this, filler is inserted into the angle of the jaw. This projects the jaw and creates a more angular appearance.

This is the most popular use of dermal fillers for men. Jawline injections for men are effective ways to ‘masculinize’ the face. However, there are many uses for jawline filler that go beyond increasing the width and angularity of the face.

Alternatively, some men and women come into the clinic with the goal of slimming a rounder or shorter facial structure. With this goal, filler will be injected into the lower half of the face, particularly around the chin. When filler is added to each side of the chin and the tip of the chin, it creates length in the face. This enhances facial harmony, balancing out your features, and gives the jawline sleek and contoured definition.

Final Takeaways

Your jaw shape and structure is largely hereditary. Lifestyle components, like your diet and body weight can influence the appearance of your jaw. Reducing body fat, performing facial massage, and practicing some jaw exercises can help to enhance jawline definition.

If you would like to add more definition to your jawline, or if these home jawline exercises aren’t giving you the results you want, jawline injections can help. This minimally-invasive procedure will give you instant jawline definition to give you the confidence you’re looking for.
